what it means to be human

In the core of things, before motherhood and creativity and evolution, there is the fundamental element that separates us from the animal kingdom.

It is compassion. It is selfless act. Away from survival insticts, from reproduction insticts, from nurishing and building and thinking and so forth, it is the very ability to consider others and to do something unrecognized and selfless, for no personal gain whatsoever.

Ponder this thougth for a minute then ask yourself: have you been a good human being today? This week, this year?

(Ps: not because god told you to, not because you are scared of punishment if you aren't a good human.
Although, there is one HUGE reward that makes humanitarianism not completely selfless: it's the deepest, warmest flash that starts as a tiny spark and explodes into tears that choke you up when you know you have brought some kind of relief or some measure of happiness to another human. Sometimes it's just a smile or a genuine greeting. Many many things ignite this spark. However, it does not make up for other wrong doings; there is no mathematical formula for being a selfish asshole or an abusive person, or just plain mean. There is no set number of community hours or hail mary-s that cancel out badness. Not even your 10% that goes towards annual fees at Frenchman's Reserve...wake up people!)
